2024 Volvo XC90

Performance

All 2024 XC90 models use various versions of a core 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine, designated as B5, B6, and T8. All are connected to an 8-speed automatic, sending power to all four wheels. Every model is electrified in some manner, with the B5 and B6 drivetrains being mild hybrids, while the T8 Recharge model is a plug-in hybrid.

The B5 drivetrain consists of a version of the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine combined with a small electric motor drawing from a 48-volt battery. The system produces 247 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. Its EPA estimated mpg is 22 city/27 highway/24 combined. The towing capacity of this engine is 4,000 pounds. It is available on the Core and Plus trim levels.

Next is the B6 drivetrain, in which the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine and motor combination produces 295 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. Its EPA city/highway/combined estimate is 20/26/23. The towing capacity rises to 5,000 pounds for the B6, and it is available on the Core and Plus trims and standard on the Ultimate.

The XC90's T8 drivetrain is a testament to how you can make an engine more powerful without increasing size. The engine combines turbocharging, supercharging, and a robust electric motor for a total output of 455 horsepower and 523 lb-ft of torque. As a plug-in hybrid, the 18.8 kWh battery will charge overnight from an ordinary household socket, leaving it ready to operate up to 32 miles on electric power alone. This is often enough to cover most of, if not all, the typical driving mileage of an average weekday, making the XC90 T8 essentially an EV during the week. For long trips, the T8 drivetrain will deliver 58 MPGe and have no need for recharging. Like the B6, the T8 has a 5,000-pound towing capacity.

The XC90 is suspended by double wishbone geometry in the front with a uniquely compact multilink rear suspension featuring a transverse composite leaf spring, a feature it shares with the mid-engine Chevrolet Corvette. That is unless you opt for the air suspension on the Ultimate trim. The air suspension replaces the standard fixed-firmness dampers and fixed-ride height springs with an adaptive suspension capable of changing ride firmness and ride height in various modes. The ground clearance can be adjusted to rise for Off-road mode or lower for an easy-entry setting that drops the vehicle by 1.6 inches and a rear cargo load setting that lowers it by 2 inches. On the road, the air suspension provides a noticeably smoother ride.

Exterior

The XC90 set the tone for the design language of the entire brand. It is an upscale but restrained elegance that will be attractive long into the future. The side windows are surrounded by aluminum trim, matched by the roof rails and rocker panel trim. Wheel sizes are big to visually fit the vehicle size, starting with 19-inch wheels on the Core and ending with 21-inch wheels on the Ultimate.

Interior

The interior follows the theme of restrained elegance. The portrait-configured 9-inch screen is well positioned to be easy to see and reach but is still integrated into the design rather than replaced on top of it. Below, a large textured volume knob centers a panel of other physical controls for often-used audio and climate functions. The center console features the Volvo signature textured start/stop knob and an electric transmission selector, shaped in crystal on the Ultimate model. To the side is a sliding cupholder cover finished in the same woodgrain found in the dash and door trim. 

The seats are designed according to orthopedic principles to remain comfortable during long trips. The Ultimate trim improves further by adding a ten-point message function for your back. The XC90 seats seven in comfort. Each seat on the 2nd row reclines individually to maximize comfort and can individually slide forward to enhance legroom in the third row further. The 2nd-row outboard seats easily fold and slide forward to ease access into the 3rd-row.

There is 12.57 cubic feet of cargo space with all the seats up. If only one 3rd-row seat is occupied, the other can fold down for more space. With both 3rd-row seats folded, there are 65.5 cubic feet of space. The 2nd and 3rd seatbacks fold flat for a single-plane floor space that can be loaded with 85.7 cubic feet of space. The tailgate opening features no end lip to facilitate sliding items in and out. Access to the tailgate when your hands are full is made easier with a hands-free power tailgate. With the keyfob on your person, merely move your foot under the rear bumper, and the tailgate opens or closes.

Features

The Google Built-in infotainment system features apps like Google Maps, the voice-activated Google Assistant, and other helpful apps through the Google Play store. The available Bowers & Wilkins audio system features 1,410 watts to bring out the most nuanced details of your music in surround sound (from digital sources) through 19 precisely tuned speakers around the cabin. Exceptionally unique is the 'Room Transformation' technology, which can recreate the acoustics of specific types of music venues, including 'Studio', 'Individual Stage', 'Concert Hall', and 'Jazz Club'. 

Standard on all models is the air purifier, which prevents up to 95 percent of hazardous PM 2.5 particles from entering the cabin. You can even monitor particle and pollen levels outside the car using the touchscreen. The Head-Up Display on the Ultimate trim projects your speed and navigation next step info on the lower windshield. The image brightness automatically adjusts to lighting conditions. Standard on all models is a panoramic roof over the 1st and 2nd rows. The front opens at the push of a button, as does the perforated textile sunshade. Dark-tinted laminated glass further increases climate comfort and security and helps protect against UV radiation.

Safety

Being Volvo, the company that focused on safety decades before other brands even wanted to touch the subject,  it's no surprise that the XC90 is an Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) earned a Top Safety Safety Pick Plus, their highest rating. This means achieving a "Good" (their highest) rating on all impact tests and earning either an "Advanced" or "Superior" rating on their crash avoidance & mitigation features. Naturally, the XC90 models also earned a 5-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

All models come standard with Pilot Assist, featuring adaptive cruise control and other driver assistance features such as Lane Keeping Aid, Oncoming Lane Mitigation Road sign Information, Slippery road alert, and Front and Rear Park Assist.

Trim Levels

The XC90 and XC90 Recharge come in Core, Plus, and Ultimate trim levels. All models have AWD. Core and Plus models have the B5 drivetrain standard with the B6 as an option. The B6 is standard on the Ultimate. All XC90 Recharge models have the same T8 Plug-in drivetrain.
