Most gas-engine Volvo models use a standard vapor-compression cycle with R-1234yf refrigerant. This system includes the compressor, condenser, expansion valve, evaporator, and cabin air filter.

Volvo's current lineup uses two fundamentally different climate control approaches depending on the model:

The EX30, EX40, EX90, and Recharge PHEV models use heat pump systems that can both cool and heat the cabin using a refrigerant cycle. Heat pumps are significantly more energy-efficient than resistive electric heaters at moderate temperatures. They are more complex than conventional AC systems and require technicians familiar with Volvo's specific heat pump architecture.

Refrigerant does not get "used up" in a correctly functioning AC system. It circulates in a closed loop. If your Volvo's AC is low on refrigerant, there is a leak somewhere in the system. Recharging without finding and repairing the leak is a temporary measure that will require another recharge before long. At our service center, every AC recharge appointment includes a leak check. If a leak is found, we present the repair options before adding refrigerant.
For Savannah's climate in particular, an AC system that is operating below its designed capacity creates a compounding problem. The system runs longer under greater load, accelerating compressor wear, and the cabin never fully reaches a comfortable temperature. A proper repair restores full capacity and reduces load on the compressor.
Coastal Georgia's pollen season is among the most intense in the country, and Savannah's marsh environment introduces additional particulates and humidity. Your Volvo's cabin air filter is the primary barrier between outdoor air and the air your family breathes inside the vehicle. Volvo recommends replacing the cabin air filter every 15,000 to 20,000 miles or annually. In Savannah's environment, staying on that schedule is particularly worthwhile. In a properly functioning system, refrigerant does not need periodic recharging. It circulates in a sealed loop and does not deplete over time. If your system needs refrigerant, there is a leak that should be identified and repaired. Recharging annually without addressing the leak source is a short-term fix that allows the refrigerant to escape, which has both performance and environmental implications, and does not restore the system to full function.
Volvo's fully electric models, including the EX30, EX40, and EX90, and Recharge plug-in hybrids use heat pump systems instead of conventional compressor AC. Heat pumps are more energy-efficient, particularly for heating where a resistive heater would drain the battery faster, and they can both cool and heat using the same core system. The service requirements and diagnostic procedures for heat pumps differ from conventional AC systems. Our technicians are trained on both.
All current Volvo models use R-1234yf refrigerant, which replaced the older R-134a used in earlier models. R-1234yf has a significantly lower global warming potential than R-134a. The refrigerant type and charge weight in grams specified for your model are critical. Overfilling or using the incorrect refrigerant type affects system performance and can damage the compressor. We use the correct refrigerant and charge weight for your specific vehicle.
A refrigerant check and recharge with leak inspection typically takes one to two hours. If a component repair is needed, such as a compressor, condenser, or evaporator, the appointment will be longer and may span a second visit depending on parts availability.
