Technology and Safety
The XC40 runs Android Automotive OS natively on a 9-inch touchscreen with Google Maps, Google Assistant, and the Google Play Store built directly into the operating system. This is not a mirrored connection. It works without a phone present. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and wireless phone charging are also standard, as is a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with split-screen capability that can show Google Maps and media controls side by side.
The NX 350 counters with a standard 9.8-inch Lexus Interface touchscreen, upgradable to a 14-inch display. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. Lexus adds cloud navigation and an intelligent voice assistant through its Drive Connect trial or subscription service, which requires an active plan to maintain full functionality. The NX also offers an available head-up display and, on select grades, a 17-speaker Mark Levinson surround sound system.
On safety, both vehicles run comprehensive driver-assist suites standard. The XC40 includes Pilot Assist (combined adaptive cruise and lane centering), BLIS blind-spot monitoring with cross traffic alert, oncoming lane mitigation, 360-degree camera, front and rear park assist with sensors, collision mitigation support at the rear, and road sign recognition, all standard across Core, Plus, and Ultra trims. The NX delivers Lexus Safety System+ 3.0, which adds Risk Avoidance Emergency Steer Assist and Left Turn Oncoming Vehicle Detection, features that are notably thorough at the system level. Both suites are strong. The XC40 makes every feature available on every trim without requiring an upgrade.
